Who else loves a DIY project? If you’re like me, you spend way too much money on teaching resources and are always looking for cheap options that will engage your students. It doesn’t get much better than these wooden pegs from Coles that are only $2.10 for a pack of 48!

There are so many possibilities with these wooden pegs — spelling, counting, fine motor activities.. the list could go on forever! In my classroom, we use them for learning to spell our names. To make these alphabet pegs, I simply used a black Sharpie pen to write lowercase and uppercase letters on each peg.

When making name cards for your little ones, make sure you leave space up the top for the pegs to attach to without covering up the letters. This way, your child can see the two letters matched up. We laminated our name cards for durability to use throughout the year.

When using these DIY alphabet pegs we are:

  • Learning to spell our names
  • Developing letter recognition
  • Developing matching skills
  • Learning about uppercase and lowercase letters
  • Developing fine motor skills
