Father’s Day is only two weeks away so we have been busy getting some beautiful gifts and cards ready for our Dads! If you’re looking for an inexpensive gift that can be made with lots of love, then this is the perfect gift for your students or children! Read on to find out how we made these beautiful timber gifts:

Step 1: Go to your local hardware store for timber

If you go to the timber section in Bunnings (or other hardware stores) there is usually an ‘off-cuts section’ where you can find super cheap timber. I got enough timber for 24 students in my class for just $6AUD. Since they are leftover ‘off-cuts’, the timber that is there will vary.

Step 2: Cut timber into pieces

Once you’ve got your timber you can cut it into pieces. I cut mine about 20cm long (approximately). We used a Jigsaw to cut the wood easily. This step was done at home with no children involved. Then, the timber was brought to school.

Step 3: Sand the pieces of timber

The pieces of timber will be rough on the edges so they will need to be sanded. I got my students to choose a piece of timber each and sand it using sandpaper. Make sure you put something protective on the tables to stop it from getting scratches and consider wearing protective gloves and eyewear if necessary.

Step 4: Time for drawing, painting and decorating!

Now it’s time for the fun part! Set up the tables ready for your students to draw, paint and decorate their pieces of timber. First, we used Micador ‘Stay Anywhere’ permanent markers to write ‘Happy Father’s Day’ and draw a picture of ourselves with our Dads. Then, we used our Micador watercolour palette to paint our timber. I love how these paint colours come up so bright on timber! After that, we used PVA glue to decorate the tops of our timber with confetti, sparkly pieces and glitter ( Because EVERYONE loves glitter — even Dads! :) ).

All set up — ready for action!

Step 5: Leave them to dry

Leave your beautiful timber artworks to dry before giving them to Dad!

Step 6: Make a matching card

We made a matching card for our Dads that will fit perfectly with our timber gifts. Our cards are shaped like toolboxes and on the inside they say ‘I couldn’t have built a better dad’ with a picture of each student dressed up as a builder. They are cuuuuuuute!!

What have you got planned for Father’s Day?

Please note that this activity was done with students aged 5–6 under constant adult supervision. Consider safety equipment during cutting and sanding of timber and consider your students’/children’s individual capabilities.
